We Are the Music Makers is a thoughtful and moving meditation on music, humanity, and the art of perfection. It is the story of Dr. Jerry Blackstone who is widely viewed to be one of the world's greatest educators of up and coming, young choral conductors. The film chronicles both his life as an unparalleled success in the choral world and his students' journeys as they navigate the struggles and successes of experiencing Jerry's much sought after training.

We find him in his 30th and final year serving as the head of choral conducting at the University of Michigan. Coming from humble beginnings on a farm and in a one-room schoolhouse, the film navigates through the milestones of his final year of teaching as former students and fellow musicians reflect on his impact at Michigan and beyond.

About the filmmaker
Brian Gaukel grew up in Ludington, Michigan and had the honor of attending prestigious institutions such as the Interlochen Arts Camp (1992-1994), the Interlochen Arts Academy (95-96) as well as the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music (1997-2000). He spent three years singing with the University of Michigan Youth Chamber Singers from 92-95, under the direction of Dr. Jerry Blackstone. These experiences with professor Blackstone dramatically shaped his life. It ultimately led to the desire to make this film about Jerry and the power of making music together.


About Jerry Blackstone
GRAMMY Award winner Jerry Blackstone is a leading conductor and highly respected conducting pedagogue. Now emeritus professor of conducting, he served on the faculty of the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance for thirty years where as director of choirs he led the graduate program in choral conducting and oversaw the University’s eleven choirs.
