YFC 2021: Advanced Documentary Technique: The Legacies Project

This one-week Advanced Documentary Technique: The Legacies Project session will train campers on making a comprehensive video history of community elders—who we call “narrators,” since they’re telling the stories of their lives. This is where the rubber meets the road. Campers will be assigned narrators to interview, and will then use the basic documentary techniques taught in Sessions 1 & 2, and learn advanced interviewing techniques to draw out and identify the stories from a stranger’s life that would be most suitable for a short form documentary. They will then edit that documentary for public display at a capstone screening event at the Michigan Theater.

This is an intensive documentary camp resulting in an actual documentary product. Recommended for motivated campers with a strong interest in reality-based filmmaking, ages 13-18, who have either completed Session 1 or 2, or can demonstrate equivalent knowledge, including basics of shooting, composition & lighting, and editing.

About the Scholarship Program

The Michigan Theater Foundation will be offering up to three full-tuition scholarships for each session of our 2021 Young Filmmakers’ Camp as we believe that no student should be discouraged from applying due to lack of funds.

How To Apply:

  • Select the "Scholarship Applicant" option from the available ticket types.
  • Complete the available registration and answer the two additional scholarship questions.
  • For the scholarship essay, the student applicant should answer the following questions in 300-500 words total:
    • Why are you interested in filmmaking?
    • What do you hope to learn from camp?

An Essay must be submitted with the registration form to be considered for the scholarship program.
